NUS đưa lịch sử Singapore đến gần hơn qua nghệ thuật

From ceramics to textiles, paintings to manuscripts, this first-of-its-kind course offers a different way to explore Singapore’s history, through the people, objects and ideas that connected the island to the rest of the world.

Long before Sir Stamford Raffles arrived in 1819, Singapore was already part of a wider world, shaped by centuries of movement, exchange and interaction across Southeast Asia and beyond.

Yet, this rich heritage has remained largely obscured by the familiar colonial narrative of Singapore’s founding.

From August 2026, about 140 undergraduates at NUS will embark on a journey into Singapore’s deeper history through “700 Years of Visual Arts: Singapore in the World”, a new General Education course that goes beyond just an art or history course, using visual and material culture to uncover connections between people, ideas and cultures that shaped Singapore centuries before Raffles’ arrival.

Developed by the Art History Minor Programme at the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences' (FASS) Department of History, the course fills a gap in Singapore’s art history education. While broad introductory courses on the art and cultural histories of places such as India, China and Rome have long been available, Singapore has lacked a comparable introduction.
